I just watched the Mac Keynote from this week... Um Jobs keeps saying how great switching processors to intel is and that the new duo will run most older apps.... Has anyone though heard when those of us who just bought the mac mini are going to be completely screwed? God apple sucks! GRR

Problems:
Learning Terminal after having not been using Linux for years
CTRL = Command (apple) key on keyboard. I hated the windows key and I have to force myself to use the apple one to copy and paste stuff.
Photoshop I have can't be ported because it's a .exe.
Quake 3 Arena 1.31 version not found, and can't be installed off the CD. :/

We are certainly in love with our new Mac mini, but what a disappointing weekend.

The plan was to hook the mini up to our 51" Sony HDTV using a DVI connection. We researched this idea pretty thoroughly and found few problems. A few reports of some blank screens, but overall it seemed possible. We ordered the mini a few weeks ago online, but then came across one in the store on Friday, fully loaded, bought it and cancelled our other oder. We bring the mini home, set it up, and it won't work with the Tv. We even went out and bought a different connector (I don't remember what it's called), which worked, but when we went back and tried something else with the DVI, we lost all connection between the computer and TV and can't even get the other connector to work.

So now we're looking at buying a monitor for it.

It just really bites that it doesn't seem to be compatible with the Tv. :P

Here's my Mini

Arrived earlier today; 1.42/256MiB/80GiB/BT. The PC that she replaced is Mutsuki, so she is Kisaragi.

Doesn't seem too sluggish with the default amount of RAM, although I'm just running Colloquy and Safari so far. Exposé could be a little smoother, but that's about it... I think you're fine, Sek :)

And yes, I know I'm not supposed to put stuff on top of her. Kinoko weighs about a gram and without him I worry I'll pile something far heavier on top during an absentminded moment (my desk was a crowded mess before I used the Mini's arrival as an excuse to clean it, and will probably return to being one in short order.) He doesn't seem to be causing any problems...

Mini Mi (x-posted)
Lookie what came today! I've got to start stripping Twelve for parts and selling her on eBay. Amazing that I'm replacing my tower with something smaller than my external CD burner. I've got my sharpened putty knife all ready to do surgery for the 1 GB ram...

Tentative name: Pinto Danish.

But I'll see if it likes that name when it gets booted. I think it's a boy.

update: 2:21 PM. Two hours to transfer all my stuff over, but it seems to work fine. Anticlimactic, really, everything is precisely as it was. Except it's quiet. Really fucking quiet. As in, you can't tell it's running, as opposed to the wind tunnel of the old tower. Wow. Plus, the (temporary) downgrade to 256 Mb hurts, real bad, slow as molasses, going to put the new chip in shortly.

update: 3:54 PM. w00t! 1gb ram upgrade is up. Warning: this is not for the faint of heart. Most of the last hour was spent just trying to put the little fucker back together. Some sites said the trick is to get it to go in vertical, but I would say it's better to get the IO block in place in the back, so that the EMI tabs fit properly behind the housing, and THEN snap the rest in place. I must have disassembled and reassembled it 10 or 15 times till I got it right. I definitely marked the clean white plastic up a teeny bit, Apple service will know I dug in there if I ever bring it in.

But, with the extra memory in place, it's fully up to speed, and I can even feel the ~<20% processor boost now. Sweeeeet!!!
